Research : Pierre Bonnard
Pierre Bonnard is a french painter, illustrator and printmarker who was born in 1867. He took part of art movements such as Post- Impressionism, which he was one of the founding members, Les Nabis and Intimism. Over the years, Bonnard painted urban scenes, landscapes, portraits and intimitate domestic scenes where the backgrounds were more important that the "object" itself.
This is a painting of Marthe de Méligny, Bonnard’s wife. Besides this one, Bonnard drew three more versions of the painting, it was a routine. Marthe who suffered from paranoid delusions believed that hydrotherapy would end up curing her so she spent a lot of time of her life in a bathtub. 'Bonnard painted Marthe over 300 times during the course of his career, and many of these images show her preparing for, immersed in, or emerging from the bath' (Tate 2010).
In this artwork the painter uses intense and luminous colours. Although Marthe is naked that is not the first thing that one notices, besides the bright colours, the distortion of the image was the first thing that I noticed in the painting. This distortion was something very common in the Post-Impressionism movement, since it was already invented the first camera and artists were trying to give art a new meaning.
The Post-Impressionism movement was a response against Impressionism, both in the 19th century in france. Artists from this movement believed that color could be independent from form and composition. Therefore they were against Impressionists' concerns about the representation of the light and colour, as we can notice in the painting Bonnard was nos concerned in painting the elements in the figure as they were represented in daily life.
Taking this into account, I really liked the painting especially because of the use of colour and distortion. Bonnard used in this painting some warm, colours that confer to the scene a sense of intimicy and romance. Although it has cold colours too, colours such red overpower the blue shades for example.

Good that you have research intertwined with your opinion - you do need to say how this would inform your own work - what have you learnt from this. You also need to add the other exercise form class and start on your own research for your project
