Project Plan: Expressionism and Seven Deadly Sins

This post will be about my plan for this term. My project has as theme the Expressionnism and I only have until week 9 to complete seven paintings.

My SMART outcome is as follows:

For my Art Portfolio project I chose the theme 'Expressionism'. I will create seven 2D pieces using acrylics or oil pastels on canvas. The concept of my paintings will be "The 7 deadly sins", in which I will represent each sin in separate paintings. The final paintings will be photographed so that I can post the final pieces on my website. The deadline to finish the project is 16th March 2021.

Why have you chosen to do this project?

The idea fo the project came from an anime entitled "Nanatsu no Taizai" written and illustrated by Nakaba Suzuki. It was attributed to each character a sin and their personality evolved from it. After watching it I was intrigued about the sins and how it was to give them life in a series. Therefore when I had to choose a concept the first idea that came to my mind was " The Seven Deadly Sins".

Furthermore, I thought that it would be interesting to explore this concept since it is a part of the Human History. The Seven Deadly Sins have been represented throughtout the centuries by several artists such as Otto Dix and Paul Cadmus and described by writers as Dante Alighier while describing hell in his poem "The Divine Comedy".

Who are you researching for this project? Please list at least three artists and/or designers and your additional research on your concept

For this I had already did some research about the artists Otto Dix, Paul Cadmus and Vladimir Zuev, who have represented the 7 deadly sins with different materials and in different periods of time and, consequently, different styles too. In terms of research about the concept, I will investigate more about each sin (how it might be represented, what is associated with, and so on) and how they have been described throughout the centuries.

What techniques/skills are you developing/learning for this project?

Although nmy progressing route is Fine Art I have not many opportunities to practice painting with acrylics which I believe that is very important to dominate. Therefore this is the technique that I expect to develop.

What do you expect the final outcome of the project to be?

The final outcome of the project will be seven 2D paintings in which I expect to demonstrate consistency through the style and colour palette as well as accuracy while representing the sins.

What have you completed so far for this project?

So far I have done some research about the concept itself and about three artists that have already represented it. However I expect to do more research about the concept and its history.

What do you think will be the issues/drawbacks to the project?
I believe that my main problem in this project will be the consistency of the seven paintings, since this is a collection that must come togehter. The sins are very different from each other and I am worried about the colour palette that I am going to use and the style of the paintings. However I will try to overcome this through colour studies and sketches.

I am also preocupied with the theme, which I am not familiar with. Although I know the theory, I have never done anything similiar to it. My paintings and drawings normally are more realistic or at least surrealist, therefore this project is completely out of my comfort zone.

What is your timescale considering that this has to be completed by Week 10?

Week 3: project sign off and post this plan

Week 4: add further research about expressionism and about sins separately

Week 5: start sketching and exploring the colour palette

Week 6: continue to sketch and start in one of the paintings

Week 7: finishing at least one of the pieces continue research about the sins

Week 8: continue to paint and start organising the website in order to put everything ready to submit

Week 9: finish all the pieces and put it in the website with everything identified and with description

What resources or materials will you need for this project?

For this I will need colour pencils, acrylics, paintbrushes, palette, canvases, oil pastels, paper and a set of pencils.

Draw a picture/Write a sentence/sketch a story/write a dialogue that captures the essence of your project.

Through the lines that I will trace I intend to express the dark side of the humanity.
