Superbia: Process
During the last few days I took special attention to the sin of Pride. I wasn't sure how I was represent this sin, but my previous research helped me a lot. As I had already mentioned, the sin of Pride is believed to be deadliest sin, since it was the one that made Lucifer revolt against God. Taking this into consideration, I chose to represent Satan with the St. Catherine wheel (the punishement for those who were proud).
This was the final result:
This was the first sketch I made using ink pen 0.8:
This was only to help me visualize what I wanted, however I was not happy the composition so I did one more:
I was very happy with this one so I added colour, using red acrylic mixed with water:
After finalizing a sketch that I liked I started to draw and paint the final piece.
I started by painting the background of black.
The I added the first layers of acrylic but mixed with a lot of water. This layer helped me to understand how the colours were going to look with each other, so that in the next layers I could change it if I felt it was needed.
Then I added some highlights and some other warm colours to the figure.
Then I added some shadows to give more texture to the drawing.
Finally I added other layer in the other elements of the drawing and finish the face of the Devil (eyes).
So far this was the sin that I liked to do the most. I believe that it well contrasted, and has a nice colour palette. For this, I used, as I mentioned before, acrylic and an A2 size paper with 400gsm. I only used two flat paint brushes from the brand Milan: the number 8 and the number 4.
And I used as reference for Satan the following image:
Your devil is truly terrifying! Excellent work!!
