Glossary of terms - Fine Art
Colour
Bernard T. (2016) defines 'colour' as an element of art that involves light - it is the reflection, on our eyes, of light waves when it strikes an object. There are a variety of terms to consider while describing colour in art. For example:
Cool - evoke calm fellings and are associated iwth sky, ice, and water - violet, green and blue
Warm - evoke warm fellings, are associated with the sun and warmth - orange, yellow and red
Analogous-colour that are near each other in the colour wheel;
Complementary - opposite colours in the colour wheel, they contrast more with each other than with any other colour;
Monochromatic - colour scheme comprised of variations of one colour;
Primary - colours that can not be created by mixing other colours - red, yellow and blue
Secondary -created by mixing two primary colours - violet, orange and green
Tertiary - created by mixing a primary colour with a secondary colour;
Bright - strong but not dark;
Brilliant - intense/vivid;
Clean - light and fresh;
Dark - created when a colour is mixed with a huge amount of black, strong and not pale;
Glowing - bright and (look) warm;
Harmonious - colours that combine well between each other;
Transparent - see-through;
Vibrant - very vivid and bright;
Techniques (painting)
Chiaroscuro - notable contrast between light and dark and commonly has a dark background with one focus light (technique used by artists such as Caravaggio and Rembrant);Impasto - texture created by the brush, normally refers to a heavy brushwork;
Sfumato - is cames from the italian word for smoke; it gives a cloudy atmosphere to the painting;
Tromp l'oeil - optical illusion of depth using realistic imagery;
